				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The brief was simple – a medium sized powerboat that traveled comfortably at a moderately high speed &#8211; <em>efficiently</em>. The quest for reduced power use lead to a hull design that is fundamentally different from that of a conventional planing powerboat. Instead, the hull is an easily driven shape that does not rely upon dynamic lift to reduce resistance. The shape is narrow, with a long waterline and a relatively low displacement. Together these factors produce a hull form that requires a mere fraction of the horsepower to drive it at moderate speeds.</p>

<p>In the pursuit of efficiency, comfort is not ignored. The long, narrow waterline reduces pitching motion and because the vessel does not change attitude when it runs there is little pounding at speed. The low centre of gravity combined with the narrow waterline reduces rolling motion in a seaway and improves the ultimate stability characteristics, and therefore safety, of the vessel. The installed Seakeeper gyro ensures that comfort in any sea state is assured.<br />

<p>The interior layout is designed for living not accommodating. In that sense hotel rooms with ensuites are done away with. Instead there is an open plan, versatile interior that offers many different configurations, allowing users to change things as daily requirements change.</p>

<p>The barge is conceived to be used for the duration of the refurbishment of the Alma Doepel. After this it is envisaged that barge be used as a floating platform suitable for many uses on the Yarra River. These could include on water concerts, exhibitions, gardens or even an ice rink!</p>

<p>24m in length and 11m wide the barge features a unique trimaran configuration below the waterline giving improved strength, resistance characteristics and protection for the four independent thrusters/drive motors. These hydraulic drive units, specifically designed and built by Commercial Catamarans, are powered by a single onboard diesel engine. The advanced control system allows for the vessel to be maneuvered by joystick in any manner, giving the craft great versatility without reliance upon a tender vessel.</p>

<p>On the main deck slide in module are accommodated under the roof above. This allows the vessel to be tailored for individual mission ranging from special needs accommodation to laboratories or film editing suites. The large flat area gives a high degree of accessibility and flexibility.</p>
<p>Forward of this are dedicated cabin and dining areas with the vessel bridge and submarine operations centre on the top level.</p>

The brief was simple: a robust, efficient vessel to carry a crew and a Triton 3300/2 submarine around the world. Influenced by extensive experience in sailing boat design this design evolved into a long, lean, streamlined vessel, heavily orientated towards efficiency and sea-keeping ability. The narrow hull form coupled with a long water line length gives exceptional performance figures with extremely low power requirements and ocean spanning range. The hull geometry and the gyroscopic stabilisation system combine to provide an incomparable ride quality and safety in even extreme conditions.</p>

<p>Bury design has been working for the past three years with the restoration team for the Alma Doepel. Built in 1904 the 130&#8242; long wooden vessel has been out of service for some years, previously working as a sail training ship.</p>
<p>The new owners intend to fully restore her to commercial sea going standards and put her back to work into her sail training role.</p>
<p>Bury design has been tasked to create a structural restoration plan which addresses the keel hogging problem the vessel currently exhibits.</p>
<p>Working in conjunction with VPAC a full member by member Finite Element Analysis of the vessel was developed. This model was then used to determine the cause of the current structural deformations and to evaluate various remedial works possible.</p>
<p>The process is ongoing however the ship is expected to be lifted from the water and works started by early 2012.</p>

<p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal;">Working closely with the builder, Commercial Catamarans, Bury design engineered and certified a number of machinery structural foundations for this vessel. This included two hiab crane foundations, 20 ton winch mounts and the A-frame foundations. The vessel is constructed entirely of welded aluminum.</span><br />

<p>All work was done to DNV standards and approved by the local marine safety organization. Bury design used Strand7 Finite Element Analysis to undertake all structural evaluations, allowing tailoring of structure to suit each specific situation.</p>
<p>Bury design also carried out stability testing for the vessel and produced intact and damaged stability assessments. Consequently the vessel is now in commercial survey for offshore waters for up to 34 crew and passengers.</p>
